” Bitches Ain’t Shit But Hoes And Tricks”
Photographic print on photo rag pearl, 841 cm x 1189 cm
This work investigates the sexual objectification of women in hip-hop culture and popular culture as a whole. Hip-hop is a mostly male dominated music culture that continues to sexually objectify women and project derogatory ideals onto youth culture. By appropriating and isolating lyrics from a famous hip-hop song “ Bitches Aint Shit But Hoes And Tricks” by Dr. Dre and re-contextualizing it into a reflective environment, we are able to critique and question these words rather than blindly absorb them. The text is juxtaposed over mannequins that have been decorated with idealized, stereotypical feminine imagery. These two ideals contradict each other and create a visual dialogue within the work.
